More cheese made in March

Total cheese production in the United States in March was 987 million pounds up 1.8 percent from March of 2014.  Italian-type cheese production increased 1.5 percent to 433 million pounds.  American-type cheese production was 1.7 percent above March of last year at 388 million pounds.

Wisconsin produced 255.8 million pounds of cheese in March up 2.5 percent from March of last year.  The Badger State produced 128 million pounds of Italian-type cheese up 1.6 percent from a year ago.  American type cheese production totaled 75 million pounds in March up 6.4 percent from a year ago with Cheddar output 9.5 percent higher.

California total cheese production was 211.6 million pounds in March up 1.3 percent from a year ago.  The Golden State produced 134 million pounds of Italian-type cheeses up 2 percent from a year ago.  American type cheese production totaled 56 million pounds 0.8 percent above March of 2014 with Cheddar output down 12 percent from a year ago at 29.8 million.

U.S. butter production totaled 162 million pounds in March down 3 percent from a year ago.

Other dairy product production in March compared to a year ago:

  •             Nonfat dry milk: 182 million pounds (+8.7%)
  •             Skim milk powders; 37.2 million pounds (-14.1%)
  •             Dry whey: 82.8 million pounds (+15.8%)
  •             Lactose: 93.2 million pounds (-6.9%)
  •             Whey protein concentrate: 42.6 million pounds (-5.3%)
  •             Regular ice cream: 70.7 million gallons (+3.5%)
  •             Low fat ice cream: 38.8 million gallons (+10.1%)
  •             Sherbet: 3.81 million gallons (-6.2%)
  •             Frozen yogurt: 6.18 million gallons (-5.4%)
