Asparagus is nearing harvest

Michigan’s asparagus crop is about a week away from the first harvest.  Ben Werling, Commercial Vegetable Educator for Michigan State University Extension says asparagus looks good at this point.  He tells Brownfield the gradual spring warm up is beneficial for growers.

“Hopefully that means that our asparagus will make it through some of the first freezes that we often have which are challenging.”

The asparagus industry continues to be challenged with an unpredictable workforce.  Werling says not having enough workers can make harvest difficult for some growers.

“A predictable workforce is very beneficial and in some years that’s been harder to come by than in others.”

Last year, Michigan was the nation’s second largest producer of asparagus with total production nearing 20 million pounds.  Werling says he expects this year’s harvest to be about the same.  He says consumers should see fresh Michigan asparagus in stores in the next two weeks.
