A warm, wet outlook for much of the Heartland

A spell of mostly dry weather will come to an end across the Plains and Midwest. For the remainder of the week, rainfall totals could reach 2 to 5 inches across the central and southern Plains and 1 to 2 inches in parts of the Midwest. Rainfall across the northern Plains and upper Midwest will be lighter, mostly an inch or less. Elsewhere, rain and snow showers will affect the Intermountain West, while a disturbance drifting northward near the southern Atlantic Coast could produce locally heavy rain. Late in the week, a surge of cool air will arrive across the northern Plains and much of the West.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to above normal temperatures nationwide, except for cooler-than-normal conditions across portions of the High Plains and the Southwest. Meanwhile, above-normal rainfall across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with drier-than-normal weather in the Pacific Northwest and northern-most Rockies.
