Favorable weather across the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, scattered showers are confined to a small band stretching from Minnesota to Nebraska. Elsewhere in the Midwest, corn planting is proceeding at a rapid pace, except in areas of the southeastern Corn Belt that remain cool with damp soils.

On the Plains, mild, mostly dry weather favors winter wheat development and summer crop planting. Isolated rain showers stretch from the middle Missouri Valley to the central High Plains.

In the South, rain lingers across parts of Virginia and North Carolina. Cool but dry weather covers the remainder of the region, allowing fieldwork to advance where soil conditions permit. In Louisiana, cotton

planting was just 5% complete by April 26, compared to the 5-year average of 26%. On the same date, rice planting in Missouri was 3% complete, compared to the average of 53%.

In the West, dry weather accompanies unusually warm conditions. Friday’s high temperatures will exceed 90° as far north as California’s Sacramento Valley. The warm weather is boosting irrigation demands, especially in California and the Desert Southwest.
