Beneficial moisture ahead for the Plains

Rain—locally totaling 1 to 2 inches—will fall across the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic States into Friday, followed by a brief period of relatively tranquil weather nearly nationwide. During the weekend and early next week, however, precipitation will increase from the Intermountain West into the Midwest, likely providing beneficial moisture for winter grains and spring-sown crops across the central Plains and western Corn Belt. Cool weather will linger across the eastern U.S. into the weekend, followed by a spell of above normal temperatures across most of the nation.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to above-normal temperatures nationwide. The northeastern U.S. has the greatest likelihood of having warmer-than-normal weather. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal precipitation across most of the U.S. will contrast with drier-than-normal conditions in the Pacific Northwest.
