Tyson to phase out human antibiotics in chicken
Tyson Foods plans to eliminate the use of human antibiotics from its U.S. broiler chicken flocks by the fall of 2017.
Company officials say they’re doing their part to slow the rise of antibiotic-resistant infections in humans. Tyson has already been working in that direction, reducing its use of human antibiotics to treat broiler chickens by more than 80 percent since 2011.
Tyson says it will continue to treat sick animals as needed. They say they’ll use the best available treatments to keep their chickens healthy, under veterinary supervision.
Tyson officials say they will also be working with their suppliers to reduce antibiotic use in cattle, hogs and turkeys.
