Grassley says COOL fix is likely if U.S. loses appeal

grassley-chuckAgriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has made it clear that Congress will have to act if the U.S. loses its third and final WTO appeal on country of origin labeling (COOL).  Vilsack says the USDA is out of options to fix the law.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says a legislative solution is likely should the U.S. lose the appeal.

“I have been a supporter of COOL for a long time, but I also respect the WTO process of basic rules in fair trade,” Grassley says. “I’ve heard concern from many people on this issue and should the WTO rule against the United States, there are many of us who will work towards a solution.”

Another adverse ruling on COOL would clear the way for Mexico and Canada to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods unless COOL is struck down or modified again to comply with WTO rules.

That WTO ruling is expected sometime next month.
