A cold start in the far eastern Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, chilly conditions linger east of the Mississippi River, where widespread frost and freezes were noted early Friday. Daily-record lows for April 24 included 24° in Flint, Michigan, and 28° in Columbus, Ohio. In contrast, mild weather and a few showers are returning to the western Corn Belt.

On the Plains, rain has spread as far north as the Texas-Oklahoma border. Elsewhere, mild, mostly dry weather prevails, although windy conditions are developing across the southern High Plains. In many areas from Nebraska southward, winter wheat is benefiting from recent soil moisture improvements.

In the South, locally heavy showers and thunderstorms are occurring across southern and eastern Texas. In the Southeast, cool but dry weather favors fieldwork, where soil conditions permit. On April 19, topsoil moisture was rated at least half surplus in six Southeastern States (AL, AR, KY, LA, MS, and TN).

In the West, cool weather accompanies scattered showers. Some of the most organized precipitation is occurring in New Mexico, the northern Great Basin, and the Pacific Northwest. Although the rain and snow showers are locally boosting topsoil moisture, hydrological drought persists in many areas.
