The highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak has reached 13 more Minnesota commercial turkey flocks.

The state Board of Animal Health reported Wednesday five detections and possibly more in Kandiyohi County, three in Stearns, three in Meeker and one each in both Ottertail and Redwood.

Kandiyohi County now has a total of 15 infected farms with samples from other flocks in the county that are being tested.

The latest infections bring the total number of cases in Minnesota to 44 affecting more than 2.5 million birds.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is reminding consumers that properly handled poultry products are safe to eat and the H5N2 virus is not a human health threat.
