Vermont GMO labeling rules finalized

Programs ICONThe rules for Vermont’s mandatory GMO food labeling law have been finalized. That state’s Attorney General’s office says the rules will take effect July 1st, 2016, giving food manufacturers plenty of time to adapt to the new labeling.

Vermont passed the labeling law last spring. A lawsuit filed by the food industry to try and block the law is still pending.

The law contains several exemptions – for example, if foods contain less than 75% genetically engineered materials by weight, food makers may use the label: “Partially Produced with Genetic Engineering.”

The Coalition for Safe Affordable Food says the Vermont law is a patchwork system that will leave consumers confused.  The Grocery Manufacturers of America is a member of the coalition which supports pending legislation in Congress that would create a voluntary federal system for GMO food labeling.
