Earth Day has brought together communities and volunteers each year on April 22 for 45 years. A global environmental celebration, Jim Johnson Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Environmental Stewardship Division, says the farmer takes part in Earth Day every day as the original conservationist.

“A lot of their work is about creating sustainability for their farm operations today, tomorrow, long into the future for their kids and their kids, kids.”

Johnson says the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program is one way the department recognizes farms addressing environmental concerns.

“It’s a systematic approach to identifying all of those places where there is a potential environmental risk on a farm operation.”

He says the department works with local conservation districts to help farmers proactively implement practices that address those environmental risks.
