MSU offers college credit to FFA students

Students that received their Michigan FFA State Degrees this spring will be the first high school students to earn college credit at Michigan State University (MSU). Dr. Randy Showerman, Michigan FFA Association State Advisor says this accomplishment was a few years in the making.

“We looked at what was the content that was being taught within our secondary programs around the state of Michigan.”  He says while working with the Michigan Department of Education, “We were able develop a set of standards that would be consistent from one high school to the next high school.”

Once standards were in place, Showerman says an agreement was developed between MSU and the Michigan Department of Education. He says students that are program completers of state-approved agriculture, food and natural resources programs and receive their State FFA Degrees, are edible to receive six college credits from MSU.

While FFA students can earn credit with community colleges, Showerman tells Brownfield, Michigan is the first state to partner with a land-grant university.   “Michigan State University is the first land-grant university to put together such an articulation agreement.”  He says, “There are other articulation agreements with community colleges, but not with a major research institution.”

Showerman says the National FFA Organization, state FFA associations and other universities are also interested in following the MSU model.
