Reach out of your comfort zone — that was the message at the opening session of the Missouri FFA Convention in Columbia.

Former FFA student Richard Fordyce, who is now director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, told members they should reach high, “I will tell you that there are kids right now, I think, that could do my job, here with the FFA. These kids are awesome. They’re fantastic.”

As for their enthusiasm, Fordyce says if you ever feel a hint of discouragement, go spend some time with FFA students.

Fordyce says Missouri Agriculture is the number one economic driver in the state because of the people, “So, if we want to maintain that and even grow that ranking, we need to continue to cultivate leadership through young people, through the FFA, so that they’re ready to take those roles.”

Governor Jay Nixon and Missouri Education Commissioner Margie Vandeven were the keynote speakers last night.

The Missouri FFA Convention continues through this evening at the Hearnes Center on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia.
