Enthusiasm for livestock starts young

AdamConover

Igniting a passion for agriculture many times starts in the show ring. Adam Conover, Michigan State University Livestock Academic Specialist and Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Coach says livestock judging builds upon family and youth leadership.

“It’s an experience that pulls families and friends together probably closer than about anything.”  Conover believes, “Getting them involved at a young age is so important for stimulating that interest and enthusiasm for agriculture, which of course we hope to see spill into adulthood and careers.”

For youth involved in judging contests, Conover tells Brownfield students learn decision making and communications skills that allow them to think independently and yet work as a team.

Conover and the MSU Block and Bridle Club partnered for the first time with the Michigan Beef Expo over the weekend to offer junior livestock judging contests, coordinated by youth for youth.
