A quieter weather pattern for the Midwest

Across the Corn Belt, mostly dry, breezy weather prevails in the wake of a departing cold front. Thursday’s thunderstorms resulted in localized wind and hail damage across the central and eastern Corn Belt, and a few tornadoes were spotted in northern Illinois and neighboring areas.

On the Plains, dry weather prevails in the wake of a departing storm. Beneficial but light precipitation fell on Thursday in Nebraska and environs, but more moisture is needed in many winter wheat production areas to help stabilize crop conditions. Early Friday, freezes were noted as far south as Texas’ northern panhandle. Friday morning’s low temperatures dipped to 24° in Garden City, Kansas, and 29° in Dalhart, Texas.

In the South, showers and locally severe thunderstorms stretch from the central Appalachians to south-central Texas. The rain is causing local flooding, while storms are producing localized wind and hail damage. In advance of the stormy weather, fieldwork is proceeding in the southern Atlantic States.

In the West, temperatures are rebounding to near- to above-normal levels. Dry weather prevails throughout the region, although a storm system is approaching the Pacific Northwest. Recent storminess boosted the average water content of the Sierra Nevada snowpack to 2 inches—8 percent of the early-April average.
