Clusters of showers & t-storms across the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, scattered showers and thunderstorms are occurring in all areas except the upper Midwest, where soils remain dry. On April 5, topsoil moisture in South Dakota was reported to be 67% very short to short. At the same time, topsoil moisture in Ohio was 46% surplus (and 0% very short to short).

On the Plains, mostly dry weather prevails. However, cool weather across the northern half of the region contrasts with lingering heat on the southern Plains, where some locations—including Childress, Texas—could exceed the 90-degree mark for a third consecutive day.

In the South, warm, dry weather favors an acceleration of fieldwork in most areas. Showers are limited to the northern tier of the region, including the northern Mississippi Delta and the southern Mid-Atlantic States.

In the West, widespread snow showers are affecting the Intermountain region. Elsewhere, beneficial precipitation is gradually ending across northern California and the Pacific Northwest, while dry, windy conditions persist in the Southwest.
