Congressional Dairy Farmer Caucus wants assurances

The leaders of the Congressional Dairy Farmer Caucus want to be sure dairy is treated fairly in any trade agreements.  In a letter signed by 75 House members to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman and U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack, the group stated Canadian and Japanese market barriers for dairy must be addressed in any Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal.

The letter says the Representatives are “very troubled by reports that Canada has still not seriously engaged in TPP partners on dairy issues.”  They write they are also “intent on ensuring that agricultural negotiations with Japan yield significant and comprehensive market access that will expand over time.”

Spearheading the letter were the Congressional Dairy Farmer Caucus co-Chairs: Reid Ribble (R-WI), Peter Welch (D-VT), Joe Courtney (D-CT), Suzan Delbene (D-WA), Tom Reed (R-NY), Michael Simpson (R-ID), David Valadao (R-CA) and Timothy Walz (D-MN).
