Bringing back lilies after Easter

After the Easter season, Michigan Floriculture Growers Council President Bill Tuinier of Post Gardens in Rockford, Michigan says your potted Easter lilies can come back next year.

“They can actually take that lily and plant it outside in their yard and it will also come back every year for them because it is hardy up here in this environment.”

Looking ahead to spring, Tuinier hopes for good weather. He tells Brownfield, “Flower sales all banks on weather when you go through May.” He say a nice May for them has no rain on the weekends and plenty of rain during the week.

While he’s not worried about water restrictions in California impacting his business just yet, Tuinier is concerned about maintaining a labor force. “I think most greenhouse are concerned about labor with economy going upward and unemployment going down, the labor pool is not out there anymore.” According to Tuinier, the migrant workforce isn’t what it used to be.

Tuinier says no matter what farmers are growing, he hopes everyone has a good start to their season.
