A wide range of weather on the Plains

Across the Corn Belt, cool weather prevails in advance of an approaching storm system. Rain, freezing rain, and a few thunderstorms are developing across the southwestern Corn Belt, including the middle Mississippi and lower Missouri Valleys.

On the Plains, a low-pressure system over the Dakotas is producing scattered showers from Kansas northward. Meanwhile, warm, breezy conditions are increasing the risk of wildfires across the southern half of the Plains. Tuesday’s high temperatures will again approach 90° in parts of Texas.

In the South, mild, dry weather favors a limited return to fieldwork, although lowland flooding persists in some areas from the western Gulf Coast region to the Mississippi Delta. By March 22, corn planting had not yet begun in Mississippi (compared to the 5-year average of 17%) and was just 1% complete in Louisiana (compared to the 5-year average of 48%).

In the West, rain and snow showers continue to spread inland across the Pacific Northwest and the northern Rockies. Precipitation is just clipping northwestern California, but having no impact on the record-low snowpack in the Sierra Nevada. Cool weather in the Northwest contrasts with warmth in the Southwest.
