EU finding ugly foods attractive

A new movement is underway in Europe to get consumers to be more accepting of “ugly food” and cut down on food waste.

Farmers the world over are challenged with feeding a growing population and to help meet the challenge, the European Union declared 2014 the year against food waste.  From that, the so-called “ugly food” movement was born.

The premise of the movement is selling fruits and vegetables that normally would be rejected by supermarket buyers or dumped by farmers.  The United Nations Environment Program estimates as much as 20 to 40 percent of fresh edible produce is discarded.

In addition to the EU, Australia and Canada have begun marketing “ugly foods.”
