NFU’s Johnson calls trade agreement a drag on economy

National Farmers Union Pres. Roger Johnson addresses NFU members at their convention in Wichita, Kan., Mar. 15, 2015.The head of the National Farmers Union (NFU) says U.S. trade policy is a drag on the economy.  On the third anniversary of the South Korea Free Trade Agreement, NFU President Roger Johnson says the result is that the U.S. imports more than it exports.  He uses that agreement as a caution for similar agreements considered by the U.S., including in his illustration all trade between the two countries, not just agricultural trade.

“Importing from other countries, mostly consumer goods, way overshadows the net export advantage that agriculture contributes to the economy,” said Johnson Sunday following his State of the Farmers Union speech to members of the organization in Wichita.

The NFU has made trade, along with Country of Origin Labeling and the Renewable Fuels Standard their three legislative priorities.
