More moisture ahead for the southern U.S.

Cooler air will temporarily overspread the Plains and Midwest through mid-week before settling across the South and East. Meanwhile, record-setting warmth will persist across the West before returning to portions of the nation’s mid-section after mid-week. Elsewhere, widespread showers will develop later Tuesday across the south-central U.S. By Thursday, precipitation will stretch across much of the nation’s southern tier, with 5-day totals reaching 1 to 3 inches from the southern Rockies into the Southeast. In contrast, mostly dry conditions will persist in California and the Great Basin, as well as much of the Midwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to below-normal temperatures across most of the eastern half of the U.S., while warmer-than-normal weather will prevail across southern-most Florida and from the Pacific Coast to the High Plains. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal precipitation across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in the southern Atlantic region, the Pacific Northwest, and the northern Plains.
