Hoping for a good spring

With the sun shining and the corn planter moved to the shop, it can only mean one thing.

“It won’t be long, hopefully we have a good spring,” said Paul Ralston who farms west of Kenton, Ohio, in Hardin County. “Unlike last year when we didn’t hardly get anything done until mid to late May.”

Ralston says lower commodity prices has caused them to rethink some things for 2015.

“We did switch to a more non-GMO, non-traited corn so we’re installing insecticide on the planter, something we haven’t had to mess with for a few years,” Ralston said. “We decided with the lower commodity prices we’d switch up and try to save where we can.”

When field conditions allow, Paul says they will be busy with spraying and tillage work and spring is also when they apply fertilizer.
