USDA studying possible use for drones

Drones could help USDA conservation experts do a better job of assessing farmlands and other lands.

But Jason Weller, Chief, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) says before the use of drones can happen, USDA is trying to figure out not only how remote sensing can be done under the proposed FAA guidelines, but also how they address privacy concerns.

“Because I know folks have concerns when the federal government starts flying drones over their property,” Weller said. “So we just need to makes sure NRCS is doing this technology in a way that’s appropriate, that’s sensitive to landowners concerns, but also helps us do a better job of managing resources.”

Weller testified before the House Appropriations Committee.
