Weather

Cold pattern to moderate somewhat

Cold weather will prevail across most of the U.S., with daytime highs averaging more than 20° below normal east of the Rockies heading into the weekend. Over the weekend, rain and mountain snow will prevail across much of the west, though totals will remain light (less than 1 inch) in the Sierra Nevada, with somewhat heavier precipitation (1-4 inches, locally more) across the Four Corners region. Sunday into early next week, a pair of disturbances will take aim on the South, East, and Midwest, with the threat of additional snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the northeastern quarter of the nation. Meanwhile, warmth will develop over the Deep South, briefly shifting into the lower Ohio Valley and Atlantic Coast States before another strong cold front arrives mid-week.

Looking ahead, the 6-10 day outlook calls for colder-than-normal conditions nearly nationwide, with warmer-than-normal weather confined to the lower Southeast and immediate Pacific Coast. Drier-than-normal conditions will prevail from the Midwest to the Pacific Coast, while above-normal precipitation is expected in the southern Rockies and from the central Gulf Coast into New England.
