New beef plant to be built in Nebraska Panhandle

cattle feedlot-milford 5-13Plans for a new beef processing plant in the Nebraska Panhandle are taking shape.

Local investors say they are about two months away from choosing a site for the project.  Gering and Bridgeport appear to be the top candidates for the plant.

Initially, the plant would process about 500 head of cattle per day, with production increasing to 1,500 head a day within five years. The investors say 40 percent of the beef would be exported to Asian markets with the rest sold domestically.

When fully operational, the plant could employ more than 500 people.
