January poultry production up 5%

USDA reports domestic poultry production during January 2015 was 3.873 billion pounds, a 5% increase from January 2014. Chicken made up most of the total, 3.369 billion pounds, with turkey at 492.314 million.

The preliminary live weight of all federally inspected poultry was pegged at 5.130 billion pounds, 5% more than a year ago, with chicken at 4.499 billion pounds and turkey at 615.110 million.

The average live weight of all chickens was 6.11 pounds per bird, 2% above last year, and turkeys averaged 31.5 pounds, 1% heavier.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 12.494 million pounds, 0.24% of the preliminary live weight, and post-mortem condemnations were 41.408 million pounds, 1.06% of monthly production.
