Brazil’s truckers continue strike

Efforts to end the strike by Brazil’s truckers are not entirely successful.  More than a week ago, the country’s truck drivers protested high fuel costs and other issues by blocking key roads.  The protests began in Mato Grosso, but eventually included a dozen Brazilian states.  Among other inconveniences, the blocked roads affect the movement of Brazil’s soybean crop to its ports.  That was partially cited for Tuesday’s soybean futures rally in Chicago.

Media reports out of Brazil indicate some of the roads have been cleared, but threats from Brazil’s attorney general to impose heavy fines on truckers who block roads have had little effect.

A presidential spokesman says the government is open to discussing some of the truckers’ issues, however there’s no plan to reduce the price of diesel fuel.
