The winter’s been tolerable

For Kent Stuckey, a dairy farmer from Crawford County Ohio, an hour north of Columbus, the winter has been tolerable.

“As long as it stays above -10,” Stuckey said. “It’s kind of painful and we’ve got fountains to thaw out and stuff like that, but it doesn’t get really bad until it gets a lot below that,” Stuckey said.

Even so, Kent would welcome temperatures at least above 15 degrees.

“We have a manure system that separates the sand out, we use sand bedding in our free-stalls and I have to turn the pumps on when it gets below 15 degrees and let them run constantly,” said Stuckey. “My pumps have been running, well I started them over a week ago and it looks like they’re going to run another week, it’s going to be an expensive month for me.”

Once the temperatures do moderate and the melting begins, Kent says instead of spending money on propane they’ll be spending money on stone for the driveways.

As for the cows, the cold temperatures haven’t been an issue, and milk production has held steady.
