Frigid weather in the eastern Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, frigid weather lingers east of the Mississippi River. Early Tuesday, some of the coldest weather stretched from central Illinois into Ohio, where low temperatures ranging from -15 to 0° were common. Meanwhile, windy conditions and snow showers are developing in the upper Great Lakes region.

On the Plains, mild, breezy conditions are overspreading areas from Montana to western Nebraska. Cold weather prevails farther south in the wake of recent snow, sleet, and freezing rain. There are some lingering travel disruptions on the southern Plains, but the moisture is beneficial for winter grains. Current snow depths in Oklahoma include an inch in Enid and Oklahoma City.

In the South, snow is blanketing areas from the southern Appalachians into the southern Mid-Atlantic region, while rain is falling in the southern Atlantic States. In addition, patches of freezing drizzle linger across the western and central Gulf Coast States. The late-season wintry weather is causing Southern travel disruptions. Current snow depths include 2 inches in Knoxville, Tennessee, and 1 inch in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In the West, beneficial precipitation continues in Arizona and environs. Elsewhere, mild weather is returning to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Meager snowpack remains a concern in the Pacific Coast States, especially from the Cascades southward through the Sierra Nevada.
