Five countries have banned Canadian beef

cattle alberta canadaA total of five countries have now banned imports of Canadian beef products in the wake of the recent discovery of a new BSE case in Alberta.

Taiwan, Peru, Indonesia, and Belarus have joined South Korea in imposing temporary bans. But Canadian officials says those are small export markets for Canada, accounting for only three to three and a half per cent of that country’s beef export sales.

Canada’s agriculture minister Gerry Ritz says officials in major export markets such as the U.S. and Japan have not given any indication they intend to impose bans.
