Missouri Supreme Court to hear farming amendment challenge

Programs ICONThe Missouri Supreme Court will hear a challenge next Wednesday, February 25th, to the ballot language of the so-called ‘right to farm amendment’ that was narrowly passed by voters last fall. The vote also survived a recount.

Don Nikodim, head of the Missouri Pork Producers Council who is a leader of the Missouri Farmers Care Coalition says he believes the language will withstand the challenge, “Our legal counsel and other folks that have been thoroughly involved in the reviews indicate that our position is very solid.  We don’t think there was confusion. I think folks (voters) knew exactly what they were doing. The activist groups that are opposing this are the ones that fought it heavily during the campaign and, so, that’s kind of where they are.”

Wes Shoemyer with Missouri’s Food for America – one of those challenging the language – says voters thought they were supporting rights for citizens. But, he says, the amendment itself refers to “farmers and ranchers,” and that means “non-citizens” such as the Chinese company that bought Smithfield Foods which he says is bad for Missouri agriculture.
