More very cold weather ahead

Following Friday morning’s freeze, cold weather will temporarily ease its grip on Florida and the remainder of the Southeast. However, a new surge of Arctic air will engulf the northern Plains and upper Midwest on Saturday, with frigid weather subsequently returning across much of the central and eastern U.S. Modestly cooler air will arrive in the West, although mostly dry conditions will persist into next week in the Pacific Coast States and the Desert Southwest. Farther east, a complex storm system will produce rain and wintry precipitation, starting later Friday, in the mid-South. The storm will result in significant snow and ice accumulations across parts of the South, East, and lower Midwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for colder-than-normal conditions throughout the central and eastern U.S., while near-normal temperatures will be limited to the Far West. Meanwhile, wetter-than-normal weather across much of the southern and western U.S. will contrast with below-normal precipitation in southern Florida and the Midwest.
