Wisconsin Corn Growers urge action on GMO bill

WI Corn

The Wisconsin Corn Growers Association has sent a letter to the Badger State Congressional delegation asking them to support H.R. 4432: The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2014. The bill would establish a federal standard for the approval of and labeling of food and beverage products made with genetically modified ingredients.

WCGA Communications Director Tom Thieding says the bill would establish the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the one authority in this.  The agency could mandate the labeling of any GMO food ingredients it determines would create a health, safety or nutrition issue.  The bill would also empower FDA to define the term “natural” and clarify its use on food and beverage labels.

The organization hopes to stir some interest in getting the bill moving before states create a patchwork of regulations across the country. Thieding says the legislation would also open a dialog on GMOs which could help inform consumers and ease fears about the biotechnology.  Thieding talks about the bill:
