Lawmakers want research halted at MARC

Programs ICONMore than 40 lawmakers, led by Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen, are asking Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack to halt research at the Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) in Nebraska immediately until new animal welfare protocols are implemented.

Vilsack has ordered an independent investigation with a report back to him in 60 days.

Cohen is a cosponsor of a bill that aims to close a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 that exempts farm animal research at federal laboratories.

Sponsors of the “AWARE” Act say a New York Times article last month, alleging abuse of animals at the Nebraska meat animal lab, indicates that animals suffered and died needlessly at taxpayers’ expense.
