Very cold air grips the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, frigid, windy weather prevails in the wake of a cold front’s passage. Widespread snow showers accompany the surge of cold air, mainly across the eastern Corn Belt. Thursday morning’s temperatures plunged below 0° throughout the upper Midwest, bringing renewed stress on livestock.

On the Plains, a fairly dramatic west-to-east temperature contrast exists, especially in northern areas. Thursday morning’s low temperatures ranged from as low as -20° in the Red River Valley to near 25° in central Montana. Later Thursday, highs could approach 60° in central Montana. Recent and ongoing warmth on the High Plains has once again eroded or eliminated winter wheat’s protective snow cover as far north as South Dakota and Montana.

In the South, cool but dry weather favors early-season fieldwork. Markedly colder air is spreading across the mid-South, including the Ozark Plateau, accompanied by gusty winds.

In the West, precipitation is mostly confined to western Washington. Unusually warm weather covers the remainder of the region, with temperatures reaching record levels for this time of year in many locations.
