More snow for the Midwest

Across the Corn Belt, cold weather prevails, except for some lingering mild conditions in the Ohio Valley. Snow from previous storms covers all but the southern tier of the Midwest, and new snow is spreading across portions of Nebraska and Iowa. Current snow depths include 12 inches in Rockford, Illinois; 9 inches in Des Moines, Iowa; and 7 inches in Omaha, Nebraska.

On the Plains, sharply colder air is arriving, although warmth lingers across parts of Texas. Wind-driven snow is spreading across Nebraska and environs, causing some travel disruptions. On the northern Plains, a variable snow cover is helping to protect winter wheat from temperatures that fell as low as -20° Wednesday morning.

In the South, a chilly rain extends along the Gulf Coast from southeastern Texas to northern Florida. In the central Gulf Coast region, the rain is halting fieldwork but easing most of the lingering concerns about dryness.

In the West, a band of rain and snow showers stretch from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Intermountain region. Dry weather and record-high temperatures persist, however, from California into the Great Basin.
