It was a good year for apple production

Total apple production in the U.S. last year was 11.2 billion pounds compared to 10.4 billion in 2013. Harvested acreage was slightly less but yield was 17.2 tons per acre compared to 15.8 the previous year. The 2014 apple crop is valued at $2.9 billion compared to $3.1 billion in 2013 as the price per apple was a little lower at 26.5 cents.

Washington State led the nation with 7.3 billion pounds of apples produced compared to 5.9 billion in 2013. New York was a distant second with 1.26 billion followed by Michigan with 1 billion pounds. Washington also had the highest yield; 46,800 pounds per acre and the most acreage; 156,000. The Washington crop was valued at $1.98 billion or 67 percent of the value of the total U.S. crop.
