Slight increase in red meat production

According to USDA, commercial red meat production during December was up slightly on the year at 4.136 billion pounds.

Beef came out at 2.001 billion pounds, 2% lower than December 2013, with the slaughter down 5% at 2.440 million head and average live weight up 29 pounds at 1,363 pounds. Pork was reported at 2.115 billion pounds, 2% above a year ago, with the kill 1% higher at 9.851 million head and the average live weight gaining three pounds to 286 pounds. Lamb and mutton was pegged at 13.4 million pounds, 3% larger than last year, with the harvest a little bit larger at 200,000 head and the average live weight three pounds heavier to 134 pounds.

For 2014, commercial red meat production totaled 47.346 billion pounds, 4% less than 2013, with annual beef production declining 6% and annual pork production down 1%.
