Protect the Harvest is leading the charge

PTH

For a second year, Protect the Harvest and the Indiana Council for Animal Welfare came together for a meet and greet with Indiana legislators.  Forrest Lucas, founder of Protect the Harvest says the event has one goal. “We want all the representatives, senators, and the Governor to know how organized we are to fight the animal rights extremists,” he says.

Protect the Harvest played a huge role in Missouri’s fight against Proposition B.  Missouri Farm Bureau president Blake Hurst made the trip to Indiana to tell state legislators about it.  “Mr. Lucas was the only person, including a lot of us in agriculture, that thought there was a chance to defeat it (Proposition B),” he says.  “We did not defeat it – it passed.  It had to do with the regulation of dog kennels.  But it was very, very close.  And with his willingness to step forward we came very, very close to defeating it.  And it made a difference.”

Protect the Harvest executive director Brian Klippenstein says part of the mission of Protect the Harvest is to prevent another catastrophic disaster like Proposition 2 in California, which went into effect January 1.  “And now they’re paying the price,” he says.  “For those that love the puns – now they have egg on their face.  The wholesale price of eggs is almost 300 percent more than it was a year ago.  Which isn’t a big deal if you’re a Hollywood member of the digestive elite.  However, if you’re a member of the middle or lower-class it’s a regressive food tax.”

And anytime a law is put into place that doubles and triples the cost of food, he says, “is a bad deal”.
