Oregon governor’s GMO bill

Programs ICONA bill introduced in Oregon at the request of that state’s governor would expand authority over GMO crops.

Governor John Kitzhaber’s bill would increase that state’s authority to regulate GMO plants by establishing “control areas” to separate biotech crops from other crops with the purpose of avoiding conflict between growers.  According to a report in the Capital Ag Press, it would be a voluntary system.

Oregon voters narrowly defeated a ballot measure last fall to require labels on genetically modified foods.  A recount upheld the vote results with slightly more votes against the initiative.
