Snow cover now depleted in parts of the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, light snow, or rain mixed with snow, is falling in parts of the lower Great Lakes region. Mild, dry weather covers the remainder of the Midwest. Recent and ongoing warmth has left snow only across the northern tier of the region; current snow depths include 3 inches in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and 2 inches in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.

On the Plains, patches of light snow are developing in the Dakotas. Meanwhile, rain is providing some beneficial moisture for winter wheat on the central Plains. On the southern Plains, however, winter wheat, rangeland, and pastures have been stressed by a string of warm, breezy days.

In the South, showers are lurking near Florida’s gulf coast. Elsewhere, mild, dry weather is promoting offseason fieldwork activities. Tuesday’s high temperatures will exceed 80° in parts of southern Texas.

In the West, mild, dry weather prevails. Ongoing dryness is especially a concern in California and the Great Basin, where little precipitation has occurred in the last month. The average water content of the high-elevation Sierra Nevada snowpack stands at 5 inches, about one-third of average for this time of year.
