Historic investment in Lake Erie

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), in Toledo on Friday, January 16, says the $17.5 million dollars awarded to the Tri-State Western Lake Erie Basin Phosphorus Reduction Initiative is a big deal for agriculture.

“It will help farmers practice the conservation practices that many are practicing now, it will enhance them, it will give incentives for other farmers to do that, so this is good news all the way around,” said Brown.

Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) joined Senator Brown in Toledo for the announcement. The ranking member of the Senator Agriculture Committee tells Brownfield the funding announced for Lake Erie is being done in a cost effective way.

“But the fact that 46 different groups, farmers, businesses, universities, conservation folks, environmental folks, you name it they all came together and said let’s figure out what we need to do to stop the algae blooms, to make sure we can drink the water, make sure we can fish, we can boat, we can protect these beautiful Great Lakes,” Stabenow said. “And then what we’ve done is add dollars to support that and it’s being done in I believe the most cost effective way.”

Senator Stabenow says the project isn’t a silver bullet, but it puts in place a plan to address the issues.
