Another pattern shift ahead from the Plains, eastward

A brief period of mild weather will cover most of the U.S. during the weekend and early next week. Some of the most impressive warmth will occur on the High Plains, where temperatures will periodically exceed 50° as far north as Montana and occasionally top 70° in Texas. Meanwhile, dry weather can be expected during the next 5 days from central and southern California into the middle and lower Mississippi Valley. However, precipitation of varying intensity will occur across the nation’s northern tier, with amounts reaching 2 to 6 inches in the Pacific Northwest and 2 to 4 inches in the northern Rockies. Late in the weekend, rain (locally 1 to 2 inches) will spread northward through the northern Atlantic States, while snow showers will develop from the Great Lakes region into the Northeast.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to below-normal temperatures across much of the country, although warm-than-normal weather can be expected in the lower Southeast and the Far West. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal precipitation across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with drier-than-normal conditions from the Pacific Coast to the Great Basin and northern Rockies.
