Weather

Very cold pattern continues for now

Across the Corn Belt, cold, cloudy weather prevails. A few snow showers dot the Great Lakes States. Wednesday morning’s temperatures dipped below 0° as far south as northern sections of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, although abundant snow covers the soft red winter wheat crop in the coldest areas.

On the Plains, patches of snow are occurring in southern Kansas and western Oklahoma. Cold weather lingers across the southern half of the Plains, but mild, breezy conditions are overspreading the northern High Plains.

In the South, wintry precipitation (mostly snow and freezing rain) is gradually ending across the southern Mid-Atlantic region. Cool, breezy weather covers the remainder of the region, except for some lingering warmth across southern Florida.

In the West, light precipitation lingers across parts of New Mexico and northern Arizona.  Elsewhere, dry weather prevails. Statewide reservoir levels are higher than this time last year in eight of eleven Western States—but lower in California, Arizona, and Nevada. Despite a wet December and a monthly gain of 3.1 million acre feet of water, California’s reservoir storage is 0.8 million acre-feet lower than a year ago.
