A January thaw ahead for the Heartland

During the early- to mid-week period, a final surge of very cold air will settle across the central and eastern U.S. By week’s end, however, lingering cold weather will be limited to parts of the South and East. As the week progresses, mild air will spread from the West across the Plains and Midwest. Meanwhile, early-week showers will gradually end in the eastern U.S., except for some lingering precipitation across the Deep South and along the southern Atlantic Coast. Farther west, snow will spread from the Intermountain West to the southern Rockies by mid-week. Toward the end of the week, heavy precipitation will begin to spread across the Northwest, including northwestern California.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures throughout the U.S. Meanwhile, drier-than-normal conditions in Florida, the High Plains, and the Desert Southwest will contrast with near- to above-normal precipitation across the remainder of the country.
