Wisconsin nutrient management plan workshops
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will conduct training sessions in the coming weeks to help livestock producers write nutrient management plans.
Certain livestock operations are required to have the plans but DATCP Nutrient Management and Water Quality chief Sara Walling says it is a good idea for all livestock operations. Not only does it protect groundwater but planning is “one of the best tools to avoid over-application of commercial fertilizer.”
DATCP funds farmer education programs through grants to county conservation departments, technical colleges and other organizations. These programs are free to farmers and sometimes offer financial incentives to them.
A statewide training session will be held January 14th at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
Scheduled county sessions include:
- January 16; Langlade County in Antigo
- January 21; Sauk County in Plain
- January 28, February 4, 11 & 18: Columbia County in Portage
- January 29; Shawano County in Shawano
- January 29 & 30: Waukesha County in Oconomowoc
- February 6, 13, 20 & 27: Green County in Monroe
- February 10, 17, 24; March 3, 5 & 12; Rock County in Janesville
- March 4; Lafayette County in Darlington
- March 26 & 27: Waupaca County in Waupaca.
