Weather

Cold pattern to gradually moderate

Looking ahead, surges of frigid air will continue to arrive across the central and eastern U.S., although temperatures will moderate slightly by early next week. Snow showers and squalls will be a companion to the cold weather downwind of the Great Lakes. Meanwhile, moisture will surge northeastward from the Rio Grande Valley, starting during the weekend. This push of moisture across cold air could lead to freezing rain spreading northeastward from Texas. Elsewhere, mild weather will persist in the West, although rain and snow showers can be expected—especially in the Intermountain region—early next week.

The 6- to 10-day outlook calls for below-normal temperatures in most areas east of a line from Texas to Wisconsin, while warmer-than-normal weather can be expected across the northern High Plains and the West. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation across the northern half of the nation, as well as southern California and environs, will contrast with wetter-than-normal.
