Cold wave concerns dominate the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, Wednesday morning’s temperatures plunged below 0° as far south as Iowa and northern Illinois, with even colder air continuing to arrive on gusty, northwesterly winds. Midwestern winter wheat has some protective snow cover, except in southern sections of Illinois and Indiana and parts of Missouri. However, the bitterly cold, blustery conditions are maintaining stress on Midwestern livestock.

On the Plains, Wednesday morning’s low temperatures ranged from -10 to -20° in parts of eastern Montana and the Dakotas. Breezy conditions accompany the bitter cold, leading to dangerously low wind chill readings for livestock and humans. The northern Plains’ winter wheat remains protected by snow, while temperatures farther south are not low enough to threaten the crop.

In the South, cold, dry air continues to arrive, although snow showers linger across Kentucky and environs. Freezes were noted Wednesday morning north of a line from northeastern Texas to South Carolina. Fields remain wet and lowland flooding continues in a few areas, mainly in the central Gulf Coast States.

In the West, mild, dry weather prevails, although slightly cooler air is edging across northern areas.
