Inland waterways tax increase

STC mast_web

The Executive Director of the Soy Transportation Coalition says the increase in the inland waterways tax from 20 cents per gallon to 29 cents, passed by the U.S. House will help. But, Mike Steenhoek tells Brownfield that now is not the time to stop putting pressure on Congress to do even more.

“The good news is we have an agricultural sector that’s producing more and we’ve got customers who are demanding more, but that just makes it that much more incumbent on us to make sure we have a transportation system that can connect supply and demand,” Steenhoek said. “The inland waterway system is an important component of that, we need to stay engaged in it.”

The money from the Inland Waterways Trust Fund is used for new construction and major rehabilitation of locks and dams. Operations and maintenance of locks and dams is financed by the federal treasury.
